Cholesterol testing alone does not detect heart disease

Fifty-percent of heart attack victims have normal cholesterol. Cholesterol testing often misses patients because it does not measure arterial damage or inflammation that is caused by additional risk factors such as poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking or substance abuse, as well as stress. Continuous arterial damage and inflammation over time leads to the formation and progression of cardiac lesions that can become unstable and prone to rupture. Unstable lesion rupture is the #1 cause of heart attacks.

What is the SmartVascular Dx™ test?

Cholesterol testing only tells us if you have an increased risk of developing disease but it doesn’t tell us if you have underlying damage. This is where the SmartVascular Dx™ test can help us help you. This test highlights any underlying risks which means that we have the information to improve your cardiac health before a heart attack happens.

The SmartVascular Dx™ test helps to diagnose clinically significant vascular inflammation by measuring the proteins that leak from cardiac lesions in the blood vessel walls. It is a serum blood test that utilises seven protein biomarkers. This provides your doctor with valuable knowledge to help determine your risk of a heart attack and from here you can make various lifestyle changes to prevent this and improve your heart health. 90% of heart disease is due to lifestyle and this is something within our control. Prevention and early intervention is key to your general wellbeing and with this test, you get the chance to change your lifestyle and reverse disease.

How does the SmartVascular Dx™ test differ from other tests for heart disease?

  • It detects arterial/endothelial damage that leads to the development of chronic diseases
predisposing to the formation of cardiac lesions.
  • It analyses disease stage and risk factors contributing to disease progression.
  • The test indicates the likelihood of a cardiac event within the next five years allowing you
the chance to make changes to your lifestyle.
  • It gives you the ability to request the test annually so that you can stay on track with
    health monitoring.

Why is it important to stay on track with your heart health?

Heart Disease remains the #1 cause of death and disability in both men and women despite recent improvements in disease management.

  • Most of the time there are no signs or symptoms of a heart attack before one occurs.
  • 50% of heart attack victims have normal cholesterol which is why it’s important to do further testing.
  • The recent AHA Get With The Guidelines® study showed that 70% of people who had a cardiac event requiring hospitalisation had cholesterol levels that were within target levels.
  • Most lesion ruptures occur in arteries with insignificant narrowing. The latest data reveals the most common cause of heart attacks is not the narrowing of the artery but the rupture of unstable cardiac lesions with 75% of heart attacks being caused by this.
